Loring provided MEP services for the infrastructure upgrades and modernization of the Michigan State Capitol and the new 40,000-SF below-grade visitor center “Heritage Hall.” Modernization of the Capitol building, a National Historic Landmark renowned for its artistic value and rich historic fabric, required extensive environmental analysis to guide the selection of MEP systems for the historic Capitol. Careful planning and phased implementation of modern systems were essential to maintain full occupancy within the building during construction. Heritage Hall serves as a welcoming venue for visitors of the Capitol and provides connectivity to the Capitol building, orientation spaces, rotating exhibits, and a 600-seat auditorium. A focal element to this project was creating a new 10,000-SF below-grade central utility plant that provides year-round heating and cooling to the Capitol building and Heritage Hall through carbon-free geothermal energy. Resilient and energy-efficient MEP system solutions provide significant life-cycle savings and allow the historic Michigan State Capitol to flourish for years to come.
