Brooklyn College Chiller Plant
Brooklyn, NY

ASHRAE Regional Technology Award - Region 1 1st Place-Existing Industrial Buildings

LORING served as prime consultant for the study and design of a 10,000-ton hybrid chiller plant and two miles of chilled water distribution system piping on the campus of Brooklyn College.  Services included cycle design, proposal support, design project management and complete mechanical, electrical, plumbing, architectural and structural design. The project was performed on a design/build basis.

The challenge was to develop a chilled water plant and chilled water distribution system that had the right balance between initial capital cost and recurring operations and maintenance costs, thus providing Brooklyn College with the best value: a project with the most favorable life cycle cost.

The project also needed to provide flexibility in order to optimize operations in the new, deregulated electric utility market.
