The New Parliament House of
Australia
Canberra, Australia

In 1980, joint venture architects Mitchell Giurgola Architects and Thorp
Architects won an international design competition for the
Australian national government complex atop Capital Hill in the city
of Canberra. LORING was an original member of the Mitchell Giurgola and Thorp team and produced a number of extensive concept designs
for mechanical and electrical systems as part of the team’s design
proposal.
After
the selection of our team, LORING became responsible for developing
the engineering program and design criteria for all building
mechanical and electrical systems including the central utilities
plant, and all related preliminary design and design development.
After approval of the proposed engineering systems, LORING entered
into a joint venture with three Sydney-based mechanical and
electrical engineering consultants (Norman Disney & Young; W.E.
Bassett & Partners; and Ledingham, Hensly, Oxley & Partners,
PTY/LTD). As the principal design engineers for the Parliament
House, LORING provided technical overview and support to the
Australian engineers and continued to be involved in the overall
coordination of the project.
The New Parliament House houses the nation’s Executive Branch,
Legislative Branch, Prime Minister’s Chambers and the Chambers for
the Senate and the House of Representatives.
