New Jersey State House  Capitol Complex
Trenton, NJ

LORING provided the complete design of HVAC, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems for a modernization, expansion and historical restoration program of the New Jersey State House Complex.

The program involved the historic renovation and restoration of two buildings including the Legislative Building (housing Assembly and Senate Chambers and conference rooms) and State Office Building (Annex) (housing committee rooms and conference rooms).  Also included was the construction of a new office building and modernization of the central utilities plant.  The project also included the design of a 26.4kV switching station and a 5kV distribution system throughout the State House Capitol Complex.  The renovated buildings were given modern mechanical and electrical systems within the context of a building on the National Historic Register.  Total area of construction was approximately 300,000 sf, in addition to an 1,100 car parking structure.

Examples of design solutions that demonstrate creative use of modern equipment in an historical application include:

·    Recessed floor mounted fin tube radiation in historical space to preserve
      wainscoting

·    Re-use of existing historical gravity ventilation openings for air return

·    Retrofit of historical chandeliers and wall mounted lighting fixtures

·    Addition of low-voltage lighting controls and rigging systems for automated
      control and ease of re-lamping
